A/N: Arc Time! Yes, this is an arc, so it'll only focus on Starr's history with one of the heroines of our story. This arc is about Mira, his childhood friend and personal attendant. She was introduced in the previous chapter, but she wasn't always so cheerful and casual with Starr. House Animus was very strict before he took control, and his life was quite bleak. Mira changed it all, as you'll read in this chapter.This entire chapter is a flashback from Starr's point of view, so keep that in mind. Enjoy this last part of my House of Animus update for my birthday!
~~~ChapterStart~~~
“Dorian, we would like you to meet someone.” My mother said to me with a stern look. It has always been a tradition in House Animus that only the current Patriarch shall inherit the name of 'Starr'. 'Dorian' is my true name, before I became the Patriarch of House Animus.
“Young one, you have reached the age where you can now properly speak, and with that comes the responsibility of learning how to command others as a perfect master in any group.” Father, the previous Starr, always stressed the idea of me becoming an accomplished leader.
“Just as your father said, commanding others is the pride of the Animus household, so to teach you the very basics of exercising your authority, we've taken a new face into our service.” Mother's face flickered with some warmth, but all I noticed at that age was her pride in our family.
“Young one, we would like you to meet Mira. She will be your personal attendant from now on and I expect you to mold her into someone worthy of House Animus, nothing less.” Father glared at me past his glasses with an intense feeling of expectation.
All I could do then was nod, still too afraid of my parents to say anything in their presence. I looked at the girl they called Mira. She looked to be about five, the same age as me, and quite natural-looking in her maid's uniform. Short brown hair, green eyes and a soft face made me happy for a reason that I had yet to learn of back then. However, the look in those eyes betrayed any feeling that she was comfortable with her position, or life in general for that matter. Even still, as an innocent five-year-old in the world, I simply ignored her depressed look. As soon as my parents left us, I pulled Mira outside with me.
Sighing, I smiled softly at her before speaking for the first time that day, “You want to play with me? My name is Starr, by the way. Everyone calls me Dorian, but soon my name will be Starr. Then everyone will see that I'm the best master in the family!”
I laughed a little before pulling her along as we ran through the grounds, introducing her to the servants I knew, especially Samuel. He saw the sadness on her face, but stayed silent about it because at that moment, I did not know it, but somehow my actions with Mira managed to plant a small seed of warmth in her empty heart. After meeting all of the servants, I took her to my special spot, where I would always go whenever I felt like having time alone. At the very back of the grounds, there is an ancient clock tower leftover from the first generation of Animus who created our legacy over 1,000 years ago. The clock tower has never stopped ticking and continues to do so, a reminder of the history behind my family.
~~~HistoryIsBoring~~~
However, at my tender age I cared little for the importance of the tower, only for the beauty it brought when we climbed up. I wanted Mira to discover the reason I loved the tower, so I asked her to go up first. Of course, she seemed scared to go, so I grabbed her hand as I led the way up the winding staircase inside the tower. After we reached the area behind the clock face, Mira's face softened somewhat and she smiled slightly at the view from behind the clock face.
“You like it up here, huh? That's good, I like it too! Mother and Father won't let me up here though, ever since I almost fell off from my special spot.” I explained as I smiled at her silence, “Come on, it's this way!” I ran to a hidden stairway past the massive pendulum inside the tower. With some hesitation, Mira slowly followed me as her eyes began to clear themselves from their hazy slumber.
After we finally reached the top of the tower, far above everything else there except the roof, I saw Mira let go of a breath she had held since she first came to this house only a few hours earlier. Her mouth was finally set in a happy smile and her emerald eyes had finally shone with new life. Then, the first words I ever heard her say to me and the very moment that sparked our lifelong friendship came forth: “Thank you.”
I didn't know what love was back then, but hearing her first words to me...there is no sweeter memory I can recall. We spent the rest of the day in that spot, I generally made most of the conversation while she silently took in everything about me. It was almost like how we started, but that time it felt like she was actually alive and enjoying my company instead of tolerating it. Slowly, bit by bit, she started to open herself to me once I finished telling her about my life and all I had come to love here. She told me that she loved nature, especially flowers, even though she had lived in the city. From the time she took her first steps, she always loved being outdoors. She told me about her older sister and how she would take her along on nature walks, emphasizing how she learned to adore violets during one of them.
~~~FunAfternoon~~~
By the time Mother and Father sent Samuel to look for us, the sun had already set and the moon slowly made its way atop the heavenly throne. Mira reverted back to her cold, silent self as I led her back down the tower, but I noticed she gave me small smiles occasionally. A new place of warmth opened up in my heart after that day, for as long as Mira was in my life, I knew that would no longer feel the loneliness I knew while living in House Animus.
For the next 3 years, we did everything together from tricking the servants, to admiring the view from our special spot, even convincing Mother and Father to let us roam outside of the grounds. Mira gradually opened up to me; she was finding her voice again, and I quickly learned that she had a fun-loving personality. I saw the life filling those jade-green eyes I admired and the smile that I loved seeing became a regular sight every time I looked at her. Everything felt right with the world at that time, as long as I had Mira with me. Even at that tender age of 8, I began to feel some attraction to my best friend, despite the strict rules Mother and Father bore into me when they still cared about my upbringing.
“You must never have any feelings of attraction to a servant. They are of a lower class than you, no matter how close you may think you are to one. When you are able to be married, you must find a woman of noble status; nothing more, nothing less.”
~~~ToughRules~~~
Father's words weighed heavily in my young mind, but I heeded them despite what I perceived to be love towards Mira. Mother agreed with Father's rule as she always did, so I alone was left to ponder what I should do about these feelings. I was quite intelligent for my age, having been self-taught and tutored by the servants, but there were some things I still did not know about. I felt the rare feeling of helplessness, so I resolved to asking Samuel for his advice on the matter once I was alone from Mira.
“Samuel, is it true what they say about love? That it conquers all things?” I asked him curiously.
“In some cases, but why did you wish to know, Young Master?” He did not seem fazed at all by my sudden question.
“I have been thinking about what Mother and Father told me about: the rules they outlined should I ever have feelings of attraction.”
“Ah, those rules are very important in keeping your bloodline pure as a noble family. However, this is more than simply following the rules, isn't it?” He always puzzled me with his astounding insight.
“Yes. It seems that I have become quite fond of...a certain maid, but the rules stop me from pursuing this fondness any further. Also, I do not quite understand this feeling of love or how I should respond to it.” I looked at his with hope shining in my eyes, confident in his vast knowledge of my family's history.
“Hmm...this is a very difficult case that you are asking me about. How important has this maid become in your eyes? If you deem her more important that your own life, then the rules can do nothing to hinder you any longer.” With that, Samuel walked on, leaving me to take in his words.
~~~WiseWords~~~
I found Mira once again after walking outside and heading towards the old clock tower. She stood at the base of the tower waiting for me, no longer wearing her normal maid attire, but instead a simple cream-colored sun dress that complemented her features very well. Thinking back on it, this was actually the first time I had seen her in somewhat casual clothing. She laughed at my 'thinking face' as she called it, and grabbed my hand as soon as I was close enough. Like always, we walked up the clock tower and this time, Mira led the way with full confidence unlike her first day here. We reached our special spot shortly and just sat there, enjoying each other's company, our fingers interlocked, watching the calm landscape as the sun hung overhead. This was one of the happiest moments I have ever known. Never before was I even remotely content; Mother and Father hardly showed me love as they did for Dante.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Starr?” She turned to me with those soft green eyes.
“What is it, Mira?” I looked at her with my own blue ones.
“Will you take me here every year from now on? Just the two of us?”
“Of course. This is our special spot, after all.”
“Thanks. You have no idea how much that means to me.”
“You don't have to thank me. I'm just glad there's someone like you around with me.” I smiled at her, oblivious to the blush that crept on her face.
“Starr, can I...tell you something?” I should have noticed her sudden hesitation, but back then I thought nothing of it.
“Sure, what do want to-” I was cut off in a flash. All I saw in that moment was her eyes staring back at me as the warmth spread across our bodies in that single climax to the time we had spent together. We held our poses for a minute or so, but to me it felt like eternity. Eventually, we pulled away, smiles adorning both of our faces.
“I love you, Starr Animus.” Mira finally said to me.
~~~Awww~~~
A/N: A lovely end to an arc, isn't it? I'll admit, this chapter was definitely the best chapter I have made by far, in any story. Mira's life was saved by Starr, who learned what love was for the first time, as well as his first kiss. The next chapter will introduce Dana, the succubus and her...interesting profession, so be ready for that as well. Don't forget to look on my profile for the poll to decide which of the heroines will be next to receive her own arc!
